It's a new quarter and there are lots of new things to come!! We will take our literacy focus to nonfiction. It is such an important part of our daily world as most of the natural reading we do is nonfiction. A few examples include: cereal boxes, road signs and the newspaper. Students will be taught the importance of reading, thinking, noticing and learning from every opportunity they are given.
We are entering a more challenging math unit applying what we know of basic facts to larger numbers, place value and word problems. Students will be presented with appropriate problem solving challenges. Watch for practice opportunities!

Our magazine fundraiser starts today! Students are not to go door-to-door. They are to simply ask friends and family. There are several opportunities to earn prizes. If students fill out the eight names on the card in the envelope and return it (no purchasing necessary), they will earn a lanyard and coop keychain for it. With each magazine ordered, students will earn a mystery coop keychain for their lanyard! What a fun incentive! Good luck!
Students enjoyed meeting with their 5th grade buddies today. They co-wrote a fictional story using a Thanksgiving theme. I am looking forward to sharing these stories with you. Ask your child about their story! They planned and typed it together.
Our time with Mr. O'Brien has come to an end. We enjoyed the last 5 weeks of his time learning about the working world, careers, taxes and our community. At one of our last sessions, students learned about voting and weighing out the pros and cons. Students were given the opportunity to select between three options to better our classroom. Students discussed and voted. Majority picked the scoop rockers which were delivered last week. Now our classroom has 7 scoop rockers instead of one to improve our flexible seating options. A BIG THANK YOU to Mr. O'Brien and Omni Resources for donating time and money to our classroom.
We finished up our module with problem solving. Students practiced the Design Process several times with many different tasks. Ultimately, they were given materials to construct a house (structure) like in The Three Little Pigs. They were in pairs to work together and think about the function of the house and how they might structure it. It was an enjoyable experience trying to blow the houses down with a "big bad wolf." Students were surprised with ideas that worked and didn't work.
Thanks to all the visitors for coming! I hope you enjoyed your time in second grade with your grandchild!
We finished our first unit in Reader's Workshop and students celebrated their growth this week. We talked about how readers should read after taking a sneak peak. We reviewed the great strategies for attacking words and understanding their meaning. We had fun giving readers tips before reading a favorite book.
PLTW= Project Lead the Way! We are experimenting with one of the modules where students are presented with problem solving opportunities to work through the design process. Students are learning about engineers, structure and function. We are looking at familiar fairy tales to work on these skills. After reading Jack and the Beanstalk, students planned and built a a beanstalk thinking about structure and function.
I am so excited to welcome you here today! I hope you enjoy getting a small taste of your little's school day. I am looking forward to chatting with you and sharing learning experiences! Be sure to encourage your student to explain things to you. My hope is that they will take ownership in their learning and be confident to express their understanding with you. Thank you for being here!
Students enjoyed a challenge with their 5th grade buddies on Halloween. Students were given candy corn and toothpicks in small groups. They had to discuss, plan and carry out their ideas to create the tallest tower using the materials. Students did a great job persevering and problem solving together. They encountered roadblocks and learned how important it is to keep going and make a new plan. They reflected and shared what worked and what didn't. I am proud of my second graders and their flexible thinking.
