Students are preparing to transition to getting tables in our classroom! It is an exciting switch! I believe in the power of flexible seating. Students will still have the opportunity to sit at their own space and have a private place for their belongings. Students are excited overall but we know this may present challenges. I am prepared to deal with this!
We also took a big math test this week. Students tackled 2-digit math this unit. This included understanding place value and applying it to large numbers in isolated equations and word problems. Please check your child's folder for their pre and post tests. Celebrate their growth and encourage them to look at mistakes and understand what they did wrong. I did give students a chance to fix mistakes. Sometimes rushing increases errors. It's a learning experience. I am proud of the students.

It appears the students forgot to get dressed today! Today we enjoyed The Polar Express movie. We have spent about a week listening to and discussing the story. Students practiced retelling the story, visualizing, looking at author's craft with specific details and comparing and contrasting! All three second grade classes had fun!
One of our areas of study in science is outer space and the moon. Our nonfiction reading and curiosity this week led us right to it! We are learning about the different planets, the phases of the moon and earth's orbit and rotation.
My students are loving the Winter weather! Remember to dress appropriately. Here they are ready with line basics, ready to enter the building!
We are taking some time to do some research with our buddies! One of our classroom discussions throughout the year is traditions. We value our own traditions and discuss the importance of respecting others' traditions and beliefs even if we may not do/ believe the same thing.
Today we got together with our buddies and put together our passport booklet. Over these three weeks until Christmas, students will research and learn about three other countries and their Christmas traditions. Today their focus was Mexico! They will complete a page in their passport and make a craft to represent something from that country. We are taking our reading strategies to the next level with growing our knowledge with nonfiction. Students are continuing to stop and jot as they read. This involves: questions, connections, new learning, things they notice and other ideas. Students are being encouraged to interact with their reading more. At home, this might involve more conversation about their reading.
Students are working on expert topics in writing. We are not doing the kind of writing that involves research (yet). Students are learning from other authors and each other how to structure their books and add different features (craft) to their books. As the books are written, students add them to a class nonfiction author bin so they can read and learn from each other. |
Mrs. KopitzkeThis is my 7th year at Spring Road School. I love it here. When I'm not at work, my family enjoys spending time together, being outside, playing games and taking trips. Archives
