With our study of the animal groups, we discussed and explored birds today. Students were excited to see a live eagle camera in Decorah. Check out the site as a family!

Students are learning about the animal groups and classification. Today we learned about the food chain and watched it in action with The Magic School Bus under the sea. We then started chatting about different food chains. Students decided if they wanted to work alone or with a small group to create a poster of a food chain. It was an enjoyable hour watching the kids get excited about their artwork and working together to show understanding!
We will be taking book clubs to the next level. We are going to be looking at the craft of an author. Specifically, we will use Robert Munsch as a mentor author. He is a great author to listen to because part of his craft is his enthusiasm for writing and how it comes out in his texts. His website is a fun one to visit. Students can look at the books he writes and even listen to each one - they are each read by the author himself!
www.robertmunsch.com We are using the last 26 days of school (Yes- there are ONLY 26 days left!) to celebrate and partake in fun learning opportunities and activities together. A calendar is going home tomorrow to explain what it will look like each day. Feel free to help your child participate. It's all for fun and dress-up days and extras are optional. Here is a snapshot!
As we are working our way through 4th quarter. Students are learning to work together with others and discuss texts. I have pulled together many small series books which students are loving because many are new to them. Students are focusing on characters, how they react, what their similarities are across the series and identifying character traits. It's been hard understanding the difference between feelings and traits. Feelings are temporary and can usually be seen on our faces where traits come from the inside and usually define a person. I encourage you to discuss character traits during nightly reading with your child! We are wrapping up a mini unit on time, graphing and data collection. Students have learned to tell time to the 5 minutes. Students have been working on creating and reading a variety of graphs and analyzing them. Students started a project yesterday where they chose a topic, collected data from their classmates and are now creating graphs to represent the information. Our test will be tomorrow.
We are starting a new unit on poetry. Students are being asked to use their creative minds to imagine something as something else. I explained that poet's use a special pair of glasses to look at something in a new way. We are using language to compare an object to something else. We discussed many different kinds of poems and made a list about what we know and what we can write poems about. Students are blowing my minds! Ask your child about their poem.
We've had some evidence of a leprechaun in our classroom. Luckily he isn't pulling any real pranks but we have found footprints, glitter and notes from our friend! Today they spotted bead necklaces hidden all over the room. It was an exciting morning!
We are really enjoying familiar Dr. Seuss stories as well as exploring new ones. Students are thinking about the author and noticing what he says or does in his books. Looking at what an author does or uses to make his book sound or look a certain way is author's craft. Students came up with a great list and are now noticing the similarities in many of his stories.
With Dr. Seuss' birthday, we are celebrating read across America with Dr. Seuss trivia, bingo, voting on favorite books and dress-up days.
